Why we use a HOWTA

Did you know material read or heard only once is usually forgotten within 30 days? Imagine how much more a child or an adult with a learning disability struggles with information retention?
Only 16% of material read and only 20% of what is seen is retained 24 hours later. For auditory learners there is better news because 30% of what is heard is retained.
By combining seeing and hearing retention is increased up to 50%, and seeing, hearing, and responding, brings retention up to 70%.
But seeing, hearing, responding, and then doing something with the information increases retention up to 90% !
The Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach uses that fourth step that many teaching approaches often leave off. HOWTA is not a curriculum but an approach to learning and teaching that can be used with any curriculum you currently use. For us the four step process along with the Christ centered approach to all academics that can be adapted to to different learning styles and differnent age groups is just what we needed.
Adding a hands on project like making a video, completing a scrapbooking page, giving a speech, doing a dramatization, or completing a community service project will wire them for retention.
Blessings,
